Art size made easy.

Choosing artwork is one of the most enjoyable parts of creating a home, but deciding on the right size can sometimes feel a little daunting. A painting might be beautiful on its own, yet feel lost on a large wall — or overwhelm a space if the proportions aren't quite right. The good news? Choosing the right artwork size doesn't need to be complicated. With a few simple guidelines, you can find a piece that complements your room, enhances your furniture and creates a beautifully balanced interior.

Start with the Space, Not Just the Artwork
When selecting artwork, it's tempting to focus entirely on the image itself. However, the wall, the furniture beneath it and the surrounding architecture all play an important role in determining the ideal size.
A useful starting point is to consider the width of the furniture below the artwork. Above a sideboard, console or sofa, a piece that occupies approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width will often create a pleasing visual relationship.
For example, above a cabinet measuring around 1400 mm wide, artwork approximately 900–1050 mm wide could be a good starting point. Depending on the height of the wall, the scale of the furniture and the overall design, a larger piece may be even more effective.
The aim is to create a sense of connection between the artwork and the furniture, rather than having the painting appear to float independently on the wall.

Understanding Artwork Dimensions
Artwork is available in a wide range of dimensions, and even relatively small differences in size can influence how a piece feels within a room.
The illustration above demonstrates several common artwork sizes, from smaller works measuring 460 × 356 mm through to larger pieces measuring 1140 × 810 mm. Seeing these proportions together makes it easier to understand how the same wall can accommodate very different formats.
When comparing sizes, consider three things:
Width: How much visual presence should the artwork have on the wall?
Height: Will the artwork sit comfortably within the available wall space?
Proportion: Does the shape of the artwork complement the furniture and the room's architecture?
A landscape painting can work beautifully above a long sideboard, while a square canvas may create a stronger focal point in a more compact setting. Tall, vertical works can be particularly effective in spaces with generous ceiling heights or narrow wall sections.
How High Should You Hang Artwork?
Getting the size right is only part of the equation. Placement is equally important.
As a general guide, artwork is often best positioned with its centre approximately 1450–1500 mm above the floor. This is a useful starting point for viewing artwork at eye level, although the ideal height will depend on the room and its furnishings.
When hanging a painting above a cabinet or console, allow enough space between the furniture and the bottom of the artwork so that the two elements feel connected without appearing cramped. A gap of approximately 150–250 mm can work well in many interiors.
Always consider the composition as a whole. Artwork should relate naturally to the furniture beneath it, rather than being positioned in isolation.
Let the Artwork Set the Mood
The size of a painting influences more than its physical presence. It also affects the atmosphere of a room.
A large artwork can establish a confident focal point, introduce colour and texture, and give a space a strong sense of identity. Smaller works can create moments of interest, particularly when thoughtfully grouped or placed in more intimate settings.
In a considered interior, artwork doesn't simply fill an empty wall. It contributes to the balance, character and personality of the space.
Think about the colours already present in your room, the texture of your furnishings, the quality of natural light and the feeling you want to create. A painting can introduce contrast, reinforce an existing palette or provide an unexpected element that brings the entire room to life.

A Simple Way to Make the Right Choice
Before purchasing a painting, measure the available wall space and the furniture beneath it. If you're unsure about the proportions, try marking the proposed dimensions on the wall using painter's tape. This simple technique allows you to step back, view the outline from different positions and assess how the artwork will relate to the rest of the room.
Remember to account for the depth of a canvas or frame, particularly when placing artwork above furniture or in a narrow passageway.
Most importantly, don't be afraid to think beyond standard sizes. Sometimes a work that is slightly larger than expected is precisely what a room needs to feel complete.
Art and Interiors: Creating a Complete Picture
Choosing artwork is ultimately about finding the right relationship between the piece and the space it inhabits. Scale, colour, texture, placement and personal expression all contribute to the result.
Whether you're furnishing a new home, refreshing an existing room or searching for a statement piece, taking a little time to consider dimensions can make a significant difference.
At Visual Edge, I believe that art and interior design work best when they are considered together. The right artwork can transform a wall, bring a room into balance and create a space that feels distinctive, cohesive and uniquely yours.
Because choosing artwork isn't just about finding something beautiful — it's about finding the right piece for your space.
