Design misconceptions unravelled

I have found that in my vast experience as an interior designer that there are some misconceptions that often lead to a 'stall' situation for some of my clients. I thought that it might be helpful to clarify so as to avoid this issue. Clients can sometimes worry about these things and it leads to project stagnation and often indecision and worry.

“Everything has to match.”
Nope - the magic is in the mix.
I've always been a huge fan of eclectic design. The days of buying a matching table and buffet or TV unit are long gone.
Rather, lets have fun using your found objects, collections and vintage items, things you've purchased when travelling that hold fond memories. All items go together to create a space that is comfortable and inviting, unpredictable and fun.

“Dark colours make rooms feel small.”
False - they make the walls recede, adding depth and atmosphere.
I'm aware that bold colour is a personal choice.
Dark colours can absorb more light than they reflect. This can be a positive thing. It can make a room feel cosier, more intimate, or more dramatic, which results in WOW factor! Dark colours can be used strategically to make a long, narrow room feel shorter by painting the distant wall a darker shade. For a softer finish, use darker colours in accessories like pillows, throws, or art work. Contrast is very important to ensure that your space isn't bland.
Dark colours can be a great choice for creating a luxurious, romantic, or calm atmosphere in rooms like a powder room or a dining area.
It's a tool, don't be scared pf colour.

“Pendants must hang centrally"
Wrong - offset is modern and intentional.
Offsetting pendant lights around an open plan room can create amazing interest. It can appear playful and whimsical.
The majority of people are a little scared of asymmetry but
