More than decoration - The power of original art in your home.

Art has a wonderful ability to change the way a space feels. It can introduce colour, create a focal point, bring personality to a room and evoke a feeling that is difficult to achieve through furniture and furnishings alone.

As an artist and interior designer, I have always been interested in the relationship between art and the spaces we inhabit. To me, a painting is more than the finishing touch to a room. It can be the starting point for an entire interior, influencing the colours, textures and atmosphere that surround it.

Why original art makes a difference

There is something special about living with an original painting. Unlike mass-produced decoration, an original artwork is a one-of-a-kind creation. It carries the evidence of the artist's hand — the layers, marks, textures and unexpected details that make it individual.

A painting can appeal to us for reasons we cannot always explain. Perhaps it is the energy of the colours, the movement of the brushwork or the way the composition draws us in. Sometimes, a piece simply feels right.

I believe this personal connection is one of the most important things to consider when choosing art. Trends may influence what we see around us, but the pieces we continue to enjoy are often the ones that mean something to us personally.

Let art lead the way

When designing an interior, it feels natural to begin by considering wall colours, flooring, furniture and window treatments. But what if we started with the artwork instead? In fact, this is an excellent place to start...

A painting can provide an unexpected colour palette for a room. A vibrant green might inspire a subtle accent elsewhere, while a combination of rust, ochre and warm neutrals could introduce richness and warmth. Strong contrasts can bring energy to a restrained interior, while softer forms and tonal variations can create a more relaxed atmosphere.

The artwork doesn't need to match everything in the room. In fact, some of the most interesting interiors are those where the art introduces contrast, individuality and a little unpredictability.

My background in interior design has given me a lasting appreciation for the way a painting interacts with its surroundings. Scale, placement, natural light and the colours around a work can all influence how it is experienced.

Choosing art that feels like you

You don't need to be an art expert to choose a painting. Nor do you need to follow a particular style or decorating rule.

Start by noticing what attracts you. Are you drawn to expressive brushwork, organic shapes, bold colour or quieter, more subtle compositions? Do you prefer artwork that brings a room to life, or something that creates a sense of calm?

Consider the space where the painting will live, but don't let practical considerations override your emotional response. A piece that makes you pause, sparks your imagination or brings you pleasure each time you walk past it is worth paying attention to.

And remember that art doesn't always have to coordinate perfectly with your existing décor. Sometimes, the piece you least expected to love is the one that gives a room its character.

Living with colour, texture and individuality

My own paintings explore colour, form and texture, with an interest in organic shapes and the expressive possibilities of paint. I enjoy the way a painting can evolve through layers and unexpected relationships, allowing the work to develop its own character.

I am interested in creating pieces that hold the viewer's attention and offer something to discover over time. A painting might catch your eye from across the room, but reveal different details when you stand closer.

For me, the appeal of art lies partly in this experience — the way a work can feel different depending on the light, your mood or simply how you happen to encounter it throughout the day.

Finding a piece you'll love for years

Buying art is a personal decision. It doesn't need to be an investment in the financial sense, and it doesn't need to be justified by a decorating scheme. Sometimes, the greatest value lies in the enjoyment a painting brings to everyday life.

Whether you are looking for a substantial original painting to anchor a living room or an art print to introduce colour and personality to a smaller space, choose something that resonates with you.

Your home should reflect who you are, not simply what is currently fashionable. Art is one of the most personal ways to express that individuality.
